HIS 367 - G: Modern Civil Resistance 3 Credit(s)
This course takes a global approach to the modern history of nonviolent resistance. Students will explore forms of civil resistance, diverse aims of civil resistance movements, and the effectiveness and limitations of civil resistance in various contexts. It will focus on Mahatma Gandhi, the US civil rights movement, various movements in 1968, Polish Solidarity, 1989 in Eastern Europe and China, and the struggle to end Apartheid in South Africa.
