Bonaventure Program Requirements

The Bonaventure Program is Quincy University’s distinctive general education curriculum, designed to embody the University’s mission as a Catholic, Franciscan, and liberal arts institution committed to the dignity of the human person and the pursuit of truth. Grounded in the Catholic and Franciscan Intellectual Tradition, the Bonaventure Program provides students with broad knowledge, intellectual flexibility, ethical grounding, and practical skills that support both meaningful lives and successful careers.

The Bonaventure Program begins with the First-Year Experience (FYE) course, which helps students transition into college by introducing them to academic expectations, campus resources, and Quincy University’s Catholic and Franciscan values. FYE fosters early success by strengthening skills in communication, critical thinking, and global awareness while building a sense of community and belonging.

Throughout their time in the Bonaventure Program, students engage in coursework that develops the knowledge, skills, and dispositions outlined in the University’s learning outcomes. Learning in the arts and sciences is assessed within each academic program, while Bonaventure learning outcomes are assessed at the University level to ensure that students gain broad competencies across disciplines.

The program concludes with the Senior-Year Experience (SYE), where students complete the Bonaventure ePortfolio. This culminating reflection allows students to select and explain work demonstrating their achievement of the Bonaventure Learning Outcomes-such as communication, critical reasoning, ethical reflection, and creative or global competencies. The ePortfolio showcases their growth, connects their experiences across the curriculum, and prepares them to enter their chosen careers with confidence and purpose.

Through coursework across disciplines, students develop the habits of inquiry, reflection, communication, and cultural understanding essential for becoming informed citizens and compassionate leaders. The program aligns with QU’s mission and integrates national career‑readiness competencies to ensure students are prepared for personal, professional, and civic life.

Students completing the Bonaventure Program will:

  1. Demonstrate Catholic & Franciscan Values by applying insights from the Catholic and Franciscan Intellectual Tradition and exploring the relationship between faith and reason as they engage fundamental questions of meaning, ethics, and human dignity.
  2. Communicate Effectively by producing clear, coherent, logically structured, and audience‑appropriate work that reflects professional standards and supports effective teamwork, collaboration, and responsible communication.
  3. Practice Critical Reasoning by analyzing evidence, evaluating arguments, and solving problems to make informed decisions across academic and real‑world contexts.
  4. Engage in Creative Expression by interpreting and responding to creative works and participating in creative processes that support personal growth, innovation, and professional development.
  5. Develop a Global Perspective by engaging with diverse viewpoints, counterarguments, and cultural perspectives that shape human experience, supporting equity, inclusion, and global understanding.
  6. Apply Ethical Reflection by using multiple ethical theories and perspectives to examine personal, professional, and social issues, and to make thoughtful, principled decisions.

Together, these outcomes ensure that the Bonaventure Program not only supports academic success but also forms students who are reflective, ethical, globally aware, and prepared to contribute meaningfully to their communities in the spirit of the Franciscan tradition.

Quincy University Service Learning Requirement

Service-learning is a form of experiential education that integrates meaningful community service with academic coursework to address human and community needs while advancing student learning. As a Catholic, Franciscan institution, Quincy University is committed to educating the whole person and fostering a lifelong dedication to service, leadership, and the common good.

Through service-learning experiences, students collaborate with approved nonprofit agencies, institutions, and organizations in the Tri-State Area and beyond to apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges. Service-learning activities are unpaid, voluntary projects in which the primary beneficiaries are the organizations and communities served rather than the students themselves. These experiences enhance academic understanding, strengthen leadership and professional skills, and promote civic responsibility, preparing students to become servant leaders who make meaningful contributions to their local, national, and global communities.

  • All incoming first-year students at Quincy University must perform thirty (30) hours of approved service learning activities before being certified for graduation. Students are strongly encouraged to complete the required service learning hours by the end of the junior year.
  • All undergraduate transfer students (excluding non-degree-seeking students) must meet the following requirement, which is based on the total number of transfer credit hours completed at the time of enrollment at Quincy University:
    • 0-23.9 hours transferred - thirty (30) hours of approved service learning activities (at least three (3) different experiences)
    • 24-47.9 hours transferred - twenty (20) hours of approved service learning activities (at least two (2) different experiences)
